KITSONG

“the unfolding of something that has been waiting.”

Kitso — knowledge. Kitsong — the place where knowing lives.
A regenerative micro-school growing in the land of the people of the dew.

The impulse

Every forest begins in darkness, underground.

Before any of it is visible — the classrooms, the gardens, the children arriving in morning light — there is a seed held quietly in the dark, gathering itself.

Kitsong began that way. Not as a plan imposed on a place, but as something the place itself had been waiting for.

“Kitsong — the unfolding of something that has been waiting.”— from the Kitsong vision boards

First roots

A seed doesn’t rush.
It readies.

Kitsong is a micro-school — small on purpose. Small enough that every child is known by name, by story, by strength. Small enough to turn with the seasons, to try, to learn, to change.

Roots first. Then the green.

The living lab

A school other schools come to learn from.

“A lab for all other schools to come and learn from — all the ways we can build soil, plant seeds, circular economy, value added.”— from the Kitsong vision boards

The garden is not beside the curriculum. The garden is the curriculum. Children learn mathematics in the seedbeds, science in the compost, economics at the harvest table — and the surplus flows back to the soil, and the community, and begins again.

  • Build soil
  • Plant seeds
  • Grow & tend
  • Harvest
  • Add value
  • Return surplus

The way we learn

Head. Heart. Hands.

“The solution is in building a central hub of knowledge where head, heart and hands come together.”— from the Kitsong vision boards

Our ethos

People. Planet.
Return the surplus.

The old permaculture ethics, carried into a school: care for people, care for the earth, and give the extra back — to the soil, to the neighbourhood, to whoever needs it next.

And diversity. Look closely at a sunflower: a thousand seeds, and no two alike. That is the field we are growing.

The world we have created

“The human world is shaped by the ideas, beliefs and values of human imagination and culture… It is created out of our minds as much as from the natural environment.”

It is a choice.

Kitsong is the choice we are making.

Rooted in Phokeng

In the land of the people of the dew.

Bafokeng — “the people of the dew” — a Setswana-speaking nation in South Africa’s North West Province, whose capital, Phokeng, sits near Rustenburg beneath mornings heavy with dew.

2007

The Royal Bafokeng Institute is established under Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi’s vision of education as the cornerstone of a sustainable future for the Nation.

2015

Kitsong School is founded in Phokeng under the auspices of the RBI — a low-fee independent school pairing e-learning with teacher craft. “Quality schooling made accessible.”

Now

The next unfolding: Kitsong as a regenerative living lab — soil, seeds, circular economy — a hub of knowledge for the whole network of schools. details to come — placeholder

A new morning

Come grow with us.

Teachers and learners. Growers and makers. Schools who want to see what a living lab looks like with the soil still on its hands. Neighbours, friends, family — the canopy has room.
